Chatsworth Road Festival returns to celebrate Clapton’s independent high street

A slow bike race, dogs who look like their owners and a football match to raise money for Homerton Hospital. The Chatsworth Road Festival is back again this year for a family fun day on Saturday 6th September, 10am – 9pm.

The festival kicks off with a football match organised by Salaam Peace Football Club, a local Islamic charity who will be raising money for the local Homerton Hospital. Other activities on the day include The Pedro Club Boxing Gym, a bouncy castle, dog show (judging, amongst other things, dogs who look like their owners), live bands and sound systems, Pimp my Bike workshop and a slow bike race as well as street food, a Beavertown beer bar and a cava bar serving into the evening. There will be an after party at 41b Social Club on Chatsworth Road hosted by Comadisco.

Hosted by Chatsworth Road Traders and Residents Association, the festival was revived last year after a 34 year hiatus, bringing together the local community for a day of workshops, live music, games and street food.

Local Lea Bridge Councillor Ian Rathbone said: “It’s fantastic to see Chatsworth Road Festival become an annual event. It’s a great example of an integrated community event – with different generations and cultures coming together from across the area to celebrate who we are and have a good time together!”

Festival organiser Allan Parker said: “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead this year after last year’s success. We want this event to become a staple in every Hackney- dwellers calendar, as it was back in the 70’s when the streets would pile out for the festival each year.”

In the 1980s, Chatsworth Road and the surrounding streets were the scene of many events from outdoor community festivals to parades with banners and floats and this year’s festival hopes to revive that community spirit.
